Game Jargon Definition: “Hexcrawl”

Hexcrawl (noun) – hex·crawl / heckskrôl /

A hexcrawl, or “hex crawl,” is a type of open-ended, sandbox-style adventure in which the player characters explore an overworld map illustrated on hex paper (often) designed by a Dungeon Master. In this mode of play, the map is dotted with points of interest for players to explore by traversing the wilderness and discovering them. The hexcrawl is contrasted with a dungeon crawl, in which the party typically explores a human-made underground labyrinth.
